As a student enrolls in 10,11,12th standard, he/she is generally bombarded with a series of questions about career, goals, aspirations etc. It isn’t easy to decide on a career option that will determine the rest of your life for you, especially at the age of 16 or 17. The confusion a student faces is huge and varied in nature. Parents are generally concerned about the score/ marks/ the performance of their kid. It’s an important step for parents to identify/ help students identify their inclination towards any particular field and in turn encourage them for long term goals instead of focusing on short term goals like achieving more than 80/90% in boards.

Following is a list of questions/ FAQ’S  a student generally comes across:

  • Should I continue with Science and opt for a B.Sc. degree?
  • Should I switch to Commerce?
  • Should I opt for a three-year regular course?
  • Should I go for a correspondence degree or a diploma?
  • Should I go for professional careers such as CA, CS or Journalism instead of design field?
  • Should I pursue a career in design? Will it earn me good money?
  • Should I pursue a career in architecture/ fashion/ design?
  • What are the prospects for a professional like an architect/fashion designer/ designer?
  • Why to think/ How to think beyond engineering and its field.
  • How to prepare for the creative world after 10th /12th field?
  • Students pursuing studies under the influence of their peers and society, for example: taking up engineering when you have been interested in Fashion Designing or Architecture?

As these questions start popping, we need to calm down, contemplate and take a conscious decision. If confusion still persists, there are career councilors available to guide the students and parents. Also, If a student has scored less than expected in class 10/12 boards, there is no need to panic or become anxious. The fact of that matter is that in today’s age of self-starters the number of options is varied and many. It is not advisable to make hasty, unplanned decisions dues to peer/parental pressure. It’s important to pursue a field one is truly passionate about.
