The lack of General Knowledge amongst millennials, students including, has become discerningly apparent. The importance of acquiring knowledge or being aware of current events held a much greater significance in the past. In previous times, teachers and parents used to emphasize of the importance of staying updated with the current events. With changing times, today, students in general, are becoming less and less aware of events happening around them.

“Social Media”, the very term doesn’t need an explanation anymore because everyone is not just aware of it but is also on it. While it does contribute to digital development, the present generation has made it obscene and abused it to the maximum extent. What was meant to connect people and businesses, and exchange useful information, has turned out to be much more than that, and not in a good way. Think about it, if you give even HALF the time you spend on Social Media, to actually learning about useful information, wouldn’t it make more sense? With the rising technology and information pouring in from all over, you are spoilt for choice with the number of ways you could pick up information. You should definitely give that a thought.

Keeping oneself updated about events goes beyond just studying, in order to clear the “General Knowledge” part of the Exams. While the concept of libraries and such, have become a thing of the past to this generation, what they fail to understand is that, it is impossible to build a civil society without being aware of current affairs happening around the world.

In simple terms, General Knowledge is important in every aspect of life, whether or not it is related to academics. General Knowledge can be classified as follows:

  • Current affairs
  • Arts
  • Science
  • Fashion
  • Health and Recreation
  • Sports

You might counter argue as to why General Knowledge is important for you to know? What significance it is to you to know about the things happening in the world? How does it help you? Or benefit you?

The importance of it accounts to so much more than answering questions to a trivia or general knowledge quizzes. Being aware of the surroundings and possessing an astute knowledge of various subjects enhances your personality on the whole. It not only offers to your personal growth and confidence, but has an upside on the academic front as well.

General Knowledge possesses the power to opens gateways to our thinking and make way to a whole new ideology, leading to a greater understanding of facts, and analysing what is best for you.  Remember, everyone is an individual, But an intellectual? That’s what you need to strive to be.

Aside from all of the general factors, enhancing your General Knowledge helps you a great deal academically. Nowadays, most of the competitive or Entrance Exams hold a dedicated section for Current affairs, which in comparison to the other sections holds a fairly high weightage of marks. This was introduced in an attempt to encourage students to learn and know about the current situation and events happening in the world. Not just the Examination but the following personal interview will also be a test of your intelligence not just academically but generally as well.

Acquiring knowledge can be done in a number of ways. Let’s take a look at some of them-

  1. Read– In block letters, repeating it again READ. One of the surest ways of acquiring knowledge is by inculcating the habit of reading. There is no hard and fast rule on the source of the information. Books, magazines, newspapers, are just a few to name out of many.
  2. Socialize– Socializing is yet another way of improving your knowledge on the current affairs. In fact, it is one of the most effective and fun ways of acquiring knowledge. But then again, it also hugely depends on the friends, acquaintances, professional contacts and the surroundings you dwell in.
